Another Word from Pastor Ken
Greetings on this Thursday in April!
We are in this together! Have you heard this statement in the last few weeks? I have heard it from celebrities, from businesses, and in fact have seen it on storefront windows on the news. It became a mantra of a sort, “We are in this together!”
But are we? Are we really in this together? Maybe for the first few weeks (2-4), but then the fabric begins to dissolve. Now there are protests about “opening up the businesses” and other protests about “keeping things closed.” Even the political slams have increased, and instead of feeling like we are in this together, we appear to be fighting about what is best for our nation, or what is best for our state or community…or what is best for me! Do we have enough testing? Should we wear masks? Should we be open? Should we remain closed?
I know that people say that crises brings us together. And they do, to a large degree, whether it be tornados, death, or viruses that affect large populations. But this week, I am asking what happened to “we are in this together”? It feels like our nation is falling apart. No one agrees with anyone.
During a 1961 address to the Canadian Parliament, President John F. Kennedy said, “Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. Necessity has made us allies. What unites us is far greater than what divides us.”
I have some good news for us today! I really do. Isaiah the prophet of old, and one of my favorites reminds us about what really UNITES us and gives us peace. He wrote in chapter 26:3-4 (NLT).
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.
Politics certainly do not unite us. Opinions really do not seem to unite us. But God through His Spirit does unite us. In fact, we cannot create unity, as we have seen so clearly in these days. Our responsibility is to “preserve or maintain the unity of the Spirit” as Paul directs us in Ephesians 4:3.
So, here is the good news…what unites us is far greater than that which may try to divide us. God will keep us in perfect peace as we fix our thoughts in HIM…as we TRUST in HIM, because He is the ETERNAL ROCK.
Prayer…unite us through your Holy Spirit, as we fix our thoughts and minds on you!
